Python is a formidable multi-purpose programming language utilized by many huge industries. It offers simple and easy-to-use syntax making it the ideal language for someone trying to learn computer programming for the first time. Python is a high-level programming language. The core design philosophy of this language is all about readability or code and a syntax that enables programmers or developers to express concepts in a few lines of code.

In the following tutorial, we will learn how to create a Hangman game or ‘Guess the Word’ Game using the Python programming language.

But before we get started, let us understand this Game and some rules. We will also learn the stepwise implementation of the Game in Python.

Understanding the Hangman game

One of those classic word guessing games played between two or more players. One player sets or defines a word or list of words, and the other player(s) have to guess correctly, given a specific number of trials. It is quick, easy, educational, and requires only a piece of paper and the ability to spell correctly. We can play this Game with a computer as well. A life or trial in the Game is lost for every wrong guess, and a “hanging man” begins to appear, piece by piece. The aim is to solve the puzzle and guess the correct word(s)/phrase before the hangman dies.

Understanding the rules of the Game

Before we start deploying this Game into a code-based solution, we must understand the rules around it – How does this game work? Then we can efficiently translate this Game into a snippet of code.

Game Rules:

Rule 1: An individual sets a word or list of words.

Rule 2: A player takes an initial guess at a letter that might start or be contained in the word or list of words.

Rule 3: If the letter is present in the word/list of words, the player gains a point and takes another turn guessing a letter.

Rule 4: If the letter is not present in the word, the player losses an attempt(s)/point, and a part of the hangman appears.

Rule 5: The hangman appears bit after bit for every wrongly guessed letter until the entire image is drawn.

Rule 6: Similarly, for every correctly guessed letter, the letters are placed on the screen until the word is completed and the player wins.

Let us now understand the stepwise implementation of the Hangman game in Python.

Implementation of Hangman in Python

The concept we are using for this project is quite simple. We are not creating any physical on-screen drawings in Python, so this version of the Hangman game will count down how many lives have remained.

Let us now understand the implementation with the help of the steps described below:

STEP 1: Importing the random module

STEP 2: Defining a function to welcome the user/player.

STEP 3: Creating a variable to get the user’s/player’s name within this function and using a string method to capture the user’s name in a sentence case.

STEP 4: Creating a decision-making process to check that the user only enters alphabets and not the numbers as a name.

Let us now consider the following snippet of code demonstrating the implementation of the above steps.

In the above snippet of code, we have imported the random module. We have then defined the greetings() function. We have defined a variable as the username that accepts a string as an input from the user containing their name within this function. We have then used the if-else conditional statement to accept only alphabets as a name.

STEP 5: Defining another function “playAgain()“.

STEP 6: Adding a decision-making process.

Let us consider the following snippet of code demonstrating the implementation of these above steps.

In the above snippet of code, we have defined a function as playAgain(). We have asked the user if they want to play again within this function and stored their answer in the userResponse variable. We have then used the if-else conditional statement to create a decision-making process.

STEP 7: Defining another function, “getWord()“, for generating random words for the user to guess.

Let us consider the following snippet of code demonstrating the implementation of the above step.

In the above snippet of code, we have defined a function as getWord(). Within this function, we have defined a list consisting of some words. We then used the random module to select a random word from the list and returned it.

STEP 8: Defining another function “gameRun()“.

STEP 9: Calling the greetings() function inside the gameRun() function to order to commence the game.

STEP 10: Defining an ‘alphabet‘ variable within the function.

STEP 11: Setting a ‘randomWord‘ variable (for guessed word) to the getWord() function for a random word to be chosen.

STEP 12: Initiating an empty list of the guessed letter.

STEP 13: Initiating the ‘attempts‘ variable to store the value for the number of attempts made by the user.

STEP 14: Setting initial guess to ‘False‘.

STEP 15: Printing an empty line.

STEP 16: Printing a guess hint for the user for the number of letters contained in the word.

Let us consider the following snippet of code demonstrating the implementation of steps 8 – 16.

In the above snippet of code, we have defined a function as gameRun(). We have called the greetings() function within this function. We have then defined a variable as the alphabet. We called the getWord() function and stored a returned value in a variable as randomWord. We have then initiated an empty list for guessed letters and a variable set to the total number of attempts. We have then set the initial value of the guess to False. At last, we have printed a guess hint for the user for the number of letters contained in the word.

STEP 17: Initiating a while loop within the gameRun() function and creating decisions, taking into consideration if the player decides to input just a single letter or the full word.

STEP 18: Also, creating decisions to check if the input value by the user is wrong and if the user inputs letters and it is not equal to the total number of letters in the word to guess.

STEP 19: Deducting attempts each time user fails to guess correctly.

STEP 20: Initiating the playAgain() function if the player wishes to continue at the end of the gameRun() function.

Let us now consider the following snippet of code demonstrating the implementation of these above steps 17 – 20.

Explanation:

In the above snippet of code, we have used the while loop. Within this loop, we have used if-elif-else conditional statements to check whether the guess input by the player is a single letter or the full word. We have also checked whether the value input by the player is wrong or not. We have also checked if the input of the letter by the user is equal to the total number of letters in the word to guess. We have then deducted the attempts each time user fails to guess correctly. At last, we have initiated the playAgain() function if the player would like to continue at the gameRun() function.

STEP 21: Calling the gameRun() function to execute the program.
