Supporting Position Management using HR Analytics

by Ramesh Ponaganti

What is PeopleSoft Position Management?

Position Management is functionality that is part of the PeopleSoft Human Resources Management System (HRMS). The system is in place in order to track positions, do trend analysis and provide information about the workforce. PeopleSoft users can use ‘Full’, ‘Partial’ or ‘No Position Management’.

  • A Position is like a chair. We can assign a title and a set of responsibilities to that chair.

  • Any person who occupies the chair inherits those attributes/responsibilities. The person who occupies the chair is called “Incumbent” of the position.

  • The advantage of using a Position is that you can define the jobs in your organization without having employees in them. You do not need to redefine the responsibilities for the replacement when the Incumbent/Person leaves your organization.

  • You can define a ‘Reports To Position (Supervisor)’ in similar way. This designation will carry the appropriate supervisor responsibilities.  It is nothing but a ‘Position Reports to Another Position (Supervisor)’ in the Position Management system.

  • Learning Management

Common Business Needs for Position Management

‘Position’ drives everything and following list includes some common business questions. All the reporting requirements will directly or indirectly use the Positions.

The organizations using PeopleSoft and Position Management will have the following needs in their reporting system.

  • Incumbent: Who is sitting on the Position?

  • What are the vacant Positions?

  • Who (Position) reports to who (Position)?

  • Supervisor (Reports To) hierarchy using the Positions.

  • Manager/Supervisor security using the Positions.
